Building my Pin Hole Camera

Please check back to see how my foray into pin hole photography is going. I haven't taken a photograph with a pin hole camera for a very long time, think mine was a biscuit tin. I am know experimenting with my Sinar F2 and building plans for a far larger version constructed from wood, or maybe a van!..I'll keep you posted.

My Thoughts on Pin Hole Photography

A pinhole camera is one of the most beautifully simple ways to explore photography. Stripped of complex lenses and modern technology, it relies on nothing more than light, time, and a tiny aperture to create an image. Building one is both a creative and educational process - an opportunity to reconnect with the fundamental principles that underpin all photography. It’s a reminder that powerful images don’t come from equipment, but from understanding light and composition.

Constructing a pinhole camera by hand invites experimentation and curiosity. From choosing materials and designing the body, to carefully creating the pin-sized aperture, every step influences the final image. The results are often soft, atmospheric, and full of character - far removed from the clinical sharpness of digital photography. Each photograph becomes a unique expression of patience and craft, shaped by long exposures and subtle variations in light.

For students and enthusiasts alike, the pinhole camera offers a deeper appreciation of how photography works. It slows the process down, encouraging thoughtful observation and deliberate image-making. In a fast-paced, digital world, it provides a refreshing alternative—one that celebrates imperfection, creativity, and the magic of light itself.
